Pioneers of Alaska

1960 - Carl Lottsfeldt

Well-known Alaska politician and businessman, Carl Frederick Lottsfeldt was born in San Francisco, California in 1898.

He first arrived in Alaska at Cordova in 1919, where he was employed with a local salmon cannery.

Moving on to Anchorage in 1921, he joined the Alaska Road Commission, where he worked for fourteen years on the development of bush airfields in Takotna, Ophir and McGrath.

Carl met Sophia Anderson in Juneau in 1928, and they were married there the same year.

Sophia was born in Douglas, Alaska in 1907 and spent her young life in southeast Alaska until she married Carl.

She was a graduate registered nurse and worked in the Juneau hospital as well as in Anchorage. She also operated a health store in Anchorage for a number of years.

Carl’s career in Alaska included a stint with the Park Service in McKinley Park, where he was chief clerk. He also served as civil works administrator at Lynn Canal, and as the postmaster and as a store owner in Ophir.

When he retired from government service, Carl went into private business, selling heavy equipment and mining machinery.

He was a well-known Alaska legislator and served as a member of the State House of Representatives from 1962 to 1966. He was running for the State Senate when he suddenly died in 1976.

Carl was also known for his efforts on behalf of the Pioneers’ Homes in Alaska and lobbied long and hard for their establishment.
