Phil was born in St. Cloud, Wisconsin in 1875, and was married to Clara Herren. His brother Joe and his wife, Arlene Wheeler, went to the Yukon with them.
The brothers went to Dawson during the Klondike gold rush before moving to Nome where they ran a printing and photography business known as Alaska Printing Co..
They also sluiced for gold on the beach through their venture The Ernst Alaska Dredging Company. Their father, A. B. Ernst, living in Seattle, was president of the dredging company, with Phil serving as secretary-treasurer and Joe as operating manager.
